The most stringent requirements for car seats

Adhesive used in car interiors must be flame-retardant. For a manufacturer of non-woven materials, we produced an adhesive with a low melting point that bonds various polyurethane foams with non-woven materials.
Bonded materials: Non-woven material with polyurethane foams
Client: Tier 2 automotive supplier
Sector: Manufacturer of non-woven materials
Medium: Powder
Polymer: Dry blend on a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) basis
Project duration: approx. 4 years

The challenge

The end product is non-woven material for car seats. The adhesive therefore needs to be flame-retardant to meet the stringent fire safety requirements for the seating. The adhesive also needs to glue to various polyurethane foams. Furthermore, it must have a low melting point to ensure the temperature-sensitive fleece does not shrink.

The path to our solution

We were able to achieve good results with a standard adhesive and a common flame retardant. For this reason, we optimised various polymers and mixed them with a very strong thermoplastic flame retardant.

The solution

We introduced approx. 20 different development products before the final solution was released. Today, the adhesive is used in series production for various models at one of the world’s largest car manufacturers. The formulation is specified and cannot be changed.
